Why Teachers Need to be Involved
Teachers, undoubtedly, are role models. They are best placed to help their students develop the capacity to discuss, deliberate, communicate and reason effectively. If teachers are to help their students develop their talk skills, then they need to be able to monitor that development and provide formative feedback that will help progress.
With proper training on how to embed oracy into their classrooms, teachers can model the quality of talk they expect from their students (in terms of tone and etiquette, as well as vocabulary and content).

Talk less. Accomplish more.
A teacher's voice is her most powerful tool. Research shows that teachers are three to five times more likely to experience voice problems than the general population, with up to 20% of teachers acutely affected each year (Pemberton, 2008). Teachers are at high occupational risk for developing voice problems. This happens because teachers have always believed that they are the only ones licensed to do the talking in the classroom.
The objective of our Teachers Oracy Workshop is to expose teachers to various talk-related strategies, activities and tools with which to engage students. Teachers will learn how they can integrate the strategies for effective talk in their classrooms.
As a teacher, learning to use noise constructively within your classroom will afford you the chance to sit back sometimes, listen, assess your students' level of understanding and reinforce lessons without explaining a thousand times.
